If you receive an official-looking letter warning that your website domain is set to expire, take a closer look before taking any action. While it could be from your legitimate website host, it could also be a marketing scam. Called “domain slamming,” this shady practice is a ploy to prompt you to switch domain registrars by cloaking a “letter of agency” as a renewal form or invoice; once you return the phony form, you could find yourself on the hook for services you don’t actually want. Protect yourself by reading the fine print closely. Pay attention to red flags such as “renewal” fees that are much higher than usual or references to a TLD extension that’s different from yours, such as .biz or .net.
